Creole Fest: Building Bridges Across Cultures – Luton

Welcome to Creole Fest, a celebration of Creole culture, art, music and diversity.

The Creole heritage is made up of many individual countries. Largely rooted in the indigenous cultures originating from the Caribbean, Africa and south Pacific, Creole cultural traditions have developed into rich festivals worldwide, with the World Creole Music Festival celebrated in Dominica at the end of Creole month in October.

Creole Fest will continue this rich tradition of celebration, and gives visitors an opportunity to learn more about Creole heritage, history, language and food. It will feature a creative arts exhibition celebrating the core traditions, artefacts and the artwork of the Creole heritage. The exhibition will give visitors an insight into the diversity of Creole people and their heritage. There will also be performances by spoken word artists, dancers and musicians.

At an evening symposium, speakers will debate the relative importance of cultural evolution versus cultural preservation in the context of migrant societies, places and mixed identities. The debate will draw on concepts related to culture and migrant societies, oral histories and intercultural relations. Our aim is to recapture and embrace the Creole heritage by raising the public’s awareness of the value of Creole festivals and arts and their contribution to society, as well as their creative role in providing a sense of identity and continuity among mixed-migrant societies.

This event will also be run on 10 November.
