The American University in Cairo

Centre for Migration and Refugee Studies Seminar Series

Geopolitics, Civil Society and Refugees

Speaker: Sara Sadek, Consultant on Migration Policy and Research & CMRS Adjunct Faculty

6:30-8:00pm, 18 November

Sixth floor lounge, Hill House, Tahrir Campus

Recently there has been a global attention towards the so-called ‘refugee crisis’, reflected in negotiations and agreements by sending, asylum and receiving states as well as main refugee actors. Understandings of such processes have tended to overlook the role played by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) operating in asylum/transit states. The talk will investigate such role as well as challenges faced by such organizations. It will focus on Egypt by assessing their roles in promoting the prospects of target groups. Such analysis will include different layers of negotiations including ones affected by the global refugee regime.
