Banished Behind Bars: Detention in the UK – London

The ability to seek safety from persecution in another country is a human right. People seeking safety are called asylum seekers until a decision is made about their case. That decision could take years, meaning that asylum seekers are kept in a dreadful limbo waiting to know whether they can stay in the UK, or will be forced to return home. However, what is not commonly known is that at any time in this process asylum seekers can be locked up and held in detention indefinitely, without any idea of when they might be released. It’s hard to know what impact this detention has on detainees, family members and communities, as research on asylum seekers is limited due to sensitive ethical issues. At this event academics invite NGOs and charities, policymakers and human rights activists to come together and discuss how we can all work together to overcome these barriers and conduct effective ethical research on detention. Members of the Centre for Trauma Asylum and Refugees (CTAR) at the University of Essex will share their own research ideas and tools, and activists and people with experience of detention will also have the chance to talk about the issues they think are most important, so influencing the direction of future academic research at CTAR. Let’s all work together to conduct great research that can shape future policies and help us support those who have endured detention.
