Remaking Home: Refugee and Asylum Seeker Experiences – Swansea

As the famous saying goes, ‘home is where the heart is’, and it’s true – our home is a vital part of our identity. From the furniture and belongings we keep, to treasured family photo albums and trinkets that remind us of times gone by – our home tells the story of who we are. Our possessions root us and give us a sense of context and belonging. They can also offer comfort at times of distress. So what about people who are forced to flee their homes and leave their belongings behind? How do refugees remake a home from scratch without their possessions to root them? Refugees usually have no choice over where they are housed and how long they can remain, making it difficult for them to make a home in a new land. This one-day ‘Festival of Home’ will explore the meaning of home for refugees and asylum seekers at different stages of their arrival journey in Swansea. The event will include a film screening, food from around the world, children’s activities and a discussion about what ‘home’ means to different people, as well as an exhibition of artwork, photographs and testimonies about home. You will get a chance to talk to researchers, refugees and community activists to find out more about home and the refugee experience.
